About Seward Farms
The History of Seward Farms
Established 1938
Seward Farms is a fifth-generation family farm which dates back to 1938. It all began with Harry Seward and his wife, Mary Aude Hinton Seward, in the early 1930s. Tanner Williams community was a thriving farming place back then, with all the families farming this rich soil to make a living. The Seward family then grew into four children which include; Polly, Bud, Bill and Diana. At that time the farm consisted of 360 acres. It began as Dairy Farm, which operated until it sold in 1952. Then after they started raising beef cattle and growing row crops.
Seward Farms Today
Today, the farm consists of over 2000 acres and 4000 leased acres, for the day-to-day farming operations. Harry (Bud) and Steve Seward are in a joint partnership for the farm. The farming operation consists of beef cattle, cotton, peanuts, corn, wheat, oats, rye grass, annual bahia grass and horses. During the cooler season of December – April, over 6,000 head of stocker calves are grazed on rye grass & will then be shipped out in the beginning of May.
Once cattle are shipped, planting season has arrived. Majority of our crops including peanuts & cotton are planted behind the rye grass, which is considered a “rotating crop field”. What fields are not planted in peanuts or cotton, have already been planted in either oats or corn.
The variety of peanuts grown on the farm is used for yummy peanut butter, may be your favorite candy bars and peanut oil. The cotton grown on the farm is sold to the gin once harvested, and then used for clothing, and even to help produce the American Dollar. The farm plants around 2,000 acres of peanuts and 2,000 acres of cotton every year.
Our extensive experience and strategic diversification in agriculture has been pivotal in making informed farming decisions, enabling us to thrive in the current market. The hands-on expertise acquired over the years has equipped us with the necessary skills, knowledge, and capabilities to effectively manage our farming operations. We are committed to staying abreast of rapid technological advancements in agriculture, which we believe has been instrumental in sustaining our family farm in today’s competitive economy.
Since its establishment in 1938, the farm has been operational for four generations and continues to thrive through 2024. Currently, it is managed by Steve and his wife Susan, their daughter Megan and her husband Chance, their son Andrew and his wife Caitlin. Together, they play integral roles in the daily functions of the farm. Additionally, the presence of the fifth generation, toddlers Sutton and Ruston, adds a vibrant dynamic as they spend their days accompanying their grandparents or parents in various agricultural activities, including working cattle, spraying crops and riding horses.
